Public
holiday of "Día de la Inmaculada
Concepción" - the Day or Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the
Virgin Mary. This is a public holiday in all Spain and signals the start of
Christmas celebrations. This is one of the special shopping days in Valencia
when big stores like Corte Ingles department stores and shopping
malls are open for Christmas shopping. La Inmaculada is not really celebrated with special events and it
just two days after the Spanish Constitution Day -
Dia de la Constitucion on 6th December every year, so many people enjoy a
long weekend. It is common in Spain to take the day off in between a public
holiday (dia festivo) and the weekend if the public/bank holiday is on a
Tuesday or Thursday. In Spain this is called "to make a bridge"
or "hacer puente" in Spanish. Puente weekends in Valencia cause a
huge exodus from the city.
