Valencia’s beautiful Mercado Colon was built by the localarchitect D. Francisco Mora who was heavily influenced by the Catalanmodernists of the era. The Mercado Colonwas inaugurated in 1916. By 1985 it wasa dilapidated ruin but the city undertook a major restoration of the structureand added and underground area with parking and another level to themarket. Today its function as a marketis limited. Instead it has become awelcome oasis in the area filled with cafés and trendy eateries as well as afew traditional shopping outlets.
